Art Gift: CreActivity – Nature & Abstract Expressionism

Creating a Nature Painting in Abstract Expressionism Style

I made a super loose

sketch of the structure I saw,

with simple lines

indicating trees, horizon

and water

Part 1 – Warm Up

Creating a loose Template on Watercolor Paper with Analogous colors

Analogous colors are groups of colors located directly next to each other on the color wheel. These color families create a harmonious, serene and cohesive appearance that is often found in nature.

Materials:

  • Gesso’d 140 lb watercolor paper
  • Greens and Blues acrylic fluid paints by Golden
  • Liquitex Gloss Medium/Varnish
  • Fun tools

Part 2

On a gesso’d canvas, I added a layer of medium Molding Paste.

Using my watercolor paper Template as a starting point, I transferred color and strokes in a similar fashion to the canvas, keeping everything loose and free.

Part 3

Introducing pops of Complimentary Color and lots of experimentation and PLAY.

Part 4

This progressive Slideshow of the various stages I moved through, staying true to the original concept of an Abstract Expression style.
